Barclays Downgrades Travis Perkins, Slashes Price Target on Margin Concerns

Barclays has significantly downgraded its rating on Travis Perkins (LON:TPK), warning that a weakening UK housing market could ignite aggressive price competition and put sustained pressure on the building materials supplier's profit margins. The bank's analysts cut the stock to “underweight” from “overweight” and slashed their price target by nearly half.
The Downgrade in Detail
In a note to clients, Barclays detailed a more pessimistic outlook for the company, leading to a series of estimate revisions:
- New Rating: Underweight (from Overweight)
- New Price Target: 463 pence (from 850 pence)
- Implied Downside: The new target suggests a 16% potential downside from the stock's current trading levels.
Barclays stated that the stock could de-rate further as the market digests potential earnings downgrades. The bank's 2026 pre-tax profit forecast for Travis Perkins now sits 6% below the current Bloomberg consensus.
Margin Pressure at the Core
AdThe primary driver for the downgrade is the fear that weaker market volumes will force a new round of intense price competition in the specialist merchanting sector. Barclays analysts noted that this has occurred in the past during periods of weak demand and high materials inflation—conditions they expect to see in the second half of the year.
A key risk, according to the bank, is that investors may start to view the decline in Travis Perkins' merchanting operating margin as a structural, competition-driven issue rather than a purely cyclical downturn. The analysts pointed to the margin's drop from an underlying 7.8% in 2023 to a projected 3.3% in 2025.
Valuation and Outlook
Barclays' sharply lower price target was driven largely by a reduction in its terminal merchanting margin estimate, which it cut to 3.4% from 6.0%. The analysts also highlighted that Travis Perkins currently trades at 22 times current-year earnings, above its last three cyclical peaks of around 18 to 20 times.
The next potential catalyst for the stock is its first-half results, scheduled for August 4, which Barclays sees as a risk to consensus earnings. In contrast, the bank maintained its “overweight” ratings on peers Howden Joinery and Breedon Group, citing their potential for market share gains and M&A-driven growth.
