AppLovin Stock Declines as Analyst Cites Stalled Market Share Growth

Summary

AppLovin shares fell after an Edgewater Research analyst warned that the mobile ad platform's market share expansion has effectively halted, forecasting slower-than-expected revenue growth for the fourth quarter.

Background

Shares of AppLovin (NASDAQ: APP) fell more than 3% in trading after an analyst at Edgewater Research cautioned that the mobile advertising company's market share gains have stalled. Citing new channel checks, the firm set a lower bar for Wall Street's fourth-quarter expectations.

Growth Headwinds Emerge

Edgewater Research analyst Joe Wittine wrote that AppLovin's share of wallet (SOW) and share of voice (SOV) metrics are no longer showing consistent growth from their industry-leading positions. Wittine attributed this to a two-pronged challenge: the company's MAX ad network reaching a "functional ceiling" for supply and intensifying competition.

"This is primarily the inevitable result of MAX’s share reaching a functional ceiling, though our interpretation of feedback also increasingly indicates competition is compressing APP’s net revenue spreads," Wittine stated in the note. The analyst specifically flagged Unity (NYSE: U) as a competitive threat putting pressure on AppLovin's revenue spreads.

Financial Forecasts Adjusted

Based on the new findings, Edgewater is forecasting AppLovin's fourth-quarter revenue to grow just 8% to 9% sequentially. This suggests a flattening growth trajectory, as the company's own third-quarter guidance of $2.055 billion to $2.085 billion implies sequential growth of roughly 7% to 8.6%.

The analyst also expressed skepticism about the benefits of an algorithm update mentioned by AppLovin management during its second-quarter earnings call. Wittine found only "spotty" validation of improvement in August, suggesting it was more of a recovery from a July decline than a net gain.

A 'Show-Me Story'

Wittine noted that the firm's previous upgrade of the stock in May, which was based on an expectation of continued supply growth, has taken a "meaningful hit." He now views the company as a "show-me story," suggesting the burden of proof is on AppLovin to demonstrate renewed momentum.

Edgewater anticipates a "healthy" reset in Wall Street's consensus estimates for late 2026 and 2027, which are likely to move lower ahead of the company's next earnings report. This adjustment, Wittine argued, is a necessary reality check for a stock that has commanded a premium valuation.
