Bitcoin Reclaims $81,000, Defying 'September Curse' on Short Squeeze and ETF Inflows

Summary

Bitcoin surged past the key $81,000 level, fueled by a massive liquidation of short positions and a significant renewal of inflows into U.S. spot ETFs. The rally marks a break from the cryptocurrency's historically weak performance in September.

Background

Bitcoin stabilized above $81,000 on Monday, following a powerful rally late last week that saw the cryptocurrency gain approximately 6.3% on Friday alone. The move, which pushed Bitcoin above the $80,000 mark for the first time since Sept. 4, was driven by a massive short squeeze and renewed institutional buying via spot exchange-traded funds (ETFs).

Short Squeeze and ETF Flows Fuel Rally

The initial catalyst for the sharp, V-shaped recovery was a record volume of short liquidations. On Sept. 19 alone, more than $243 million in bearish Bitcoin positions were forcibly closed, according to market data. Across the entire crypto market, total liquidations in a 24-hour period reached approximately $499 million, with short positions accounting for about $445 million of that total.

Following the short-covering rally, institutional capital provided more sustained momentum. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs saw a combined net inflow of $5.91 billion on Thursday and Friday, ending a two-day streak of outflows. Key contributors included Fidelity's FBTC, with $310.7 million in inflows, and BlackRock's IBIT, which added $1.084 billion. "Inflows into U.S. spot ETFs and short covering jointly pushed the price past the psychological $80,000 mark," noted Lacie Zhang, a research analyst at Bitget Wallet.

This price action sent ripples through equity markets, with crypto-related stocks soaring on Friday. Coinbase (NASDAQ: COIN) jumped nearly 11.7%, MicroStrategy (NASDAQ: MSTR) surged 16.4%, and mining firm Marathon Digital (NASDAQ: MARA) gained 13.8%.

Resilience Amid Macro Headwinds

The rally's strength is notable given an unfavorable macroeconomic backdrop. The Federal Reserve raised its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points to a 3.75%-4.00% range on Sept. 16, its first hike since July 2023. Coupled with the 30-year Treasury yield closing at 5.34% on Friday, the rising cost of capital typically suppresses appetite for risk assets like cryptocurrencies.

Despite these headwinds, Bitcoin only briefly dipped to a low of approximately $74,965 before its strong rebound, demonstrating market resilience. "The crypto market has absorbed a fairly hawkish repricing without much damage," said Sean Farrell, head of digital assets at Fundstrat.

Technical Outlook and Key Levels

With a month-to-date gain of 3.4%, Bitcoin is on track to break its historical "September curse," a month that has seen an average decline of about 2.9%. This would mark the fourth consecutive year of positive returns for Bitcoin in September.

Technically, a significant resistance zone lies between $82,000 and $86,000, where an estimated 1.07 million BTC were acquired. A decisive break above this level could set a course for $90,000. Looking ahead, daily flow data from U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs will be a critical indicator. Analysts suggest that sustained net outflows exceeding $200 million for three consecutive days could signal a risk-off environment, while continued inflows would support the price above the $80,000 level.
