Bitcoin Nears $82,000 as SEC Exemption and Late-Week ETF Inflows Reverse Sentiment

Summary

Bitcoin's price rallied to nearly $82,000, driven by a significant turnaround in U.S. spot ETF flows and a key regulatory exemption from the SEC for tokenized securities, which overshadowed an earlier legislative setback.

Background

Bitcoin surged to $82,078 during Asian trading on Monday, extending a rally that began late last week and bringing the cryptocurrency to within $200 of its four-month high. The recovery was fueled by a dramatic reversal in U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF flows and a pivotal regulatory development from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) that boosted market sentiment.

ETF Flows See Dramatic Reversal

U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs narrowly avoided a week of net outflows, ending with a slight net inflow of approximately $6.2 million for the week, according to data from Farside Investors. This figure masks a period of extreme volatility that saw heavy redemptions early in the week, including net outflows of $450.4 million on Monday, Sept. 15, and $295.9 million on Tuesday, Sept. 16.

The trend reversed sharply later in the week, with combined inflows of $592.5 million on Thursday and Friday. The inflows were highly concentrated in the two largest funds:

  • On Thursday, Sept. 18, ETFs saw total net inflows of $433 million.
  • Fidelity’s FBTC attracted $310.7 million, representing about 72% of the day's total.
  • BlackRock’s IBIT took in $108.4 million, with the two funds accounting for 97% of the day's net inflows.

Since their launch in January 2024, the spot Bitcoin ETFs have accumulated a total of $55.23 billion in net inflows, with total assets under management standing at approximately $102.53 billion, as reported by Coinotag.

SEC Exemption for Tokenized Securities Boosts Confidence

The market's turning point came on Thursday, Sept. 17, when the SEC issued a temporary, conditional exemption for "Tokenized Securities Venues" (TSVs). This order allows such platforms to use automated market maker (AMM) liquidity pools for trading tokenized NMS stocks without being classified as a national securities exchange under the Securities Exchange Act. The exemption is set to last for five years.

This regulatory green light was a stark contrast to a legislative setback earlier in the week. On Sept. 15, the U.S. Senate failed to advance the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act (CLARITY Act), a bill aimed at clarifying regulatory jurisdiction between the SEC and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). The failure of the bill had initially sent Bitcoin's price tumbling below $76,000.

Market Impact and Macro Context

The positive SEC news helped fuel a price recovery and a short squeeze. Bitcoin, which had traded below $77,000 earlier in the week, was trading around $81,174 by Friday, Sept. 19, a 24-hour gain of about 5%. According to Blockonomi, significant liquidation liquidity was clustered around the $82,000 level, while Glassnode identified a major supply zone between $83,000 and $86,000.

Crypto-related equities also reacted positively. On Friday, Coinbase (COIN) shares surged 11.7%, making it the top performer in the S&P 500, while Robinhood (HOOD) gained 9.1%. However, the rally faces potential macroeconomic headwinds. The Federal Reserve raised interest rates by 25 basis points on Sept. 16, its first hike since July 2023, and the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield has climbed back above 5%.
