McDonald's Targets Mid-50% Operating Margin, Touts AI and Unit Growth in 2030 Strategy

Summary
McDonald's outlined its "McDonald's > NEXT" growth strategy, setting long-term financial goals that include a significant operating margin expansion, steady unit growth, and the deployment of generative AI to boost efficiency.
McDonald's Corporation (NYSE: MCD) has unveiled a new long-term growth strategy, dubbed "McDonald's > NEXT," setting ambitious financial and operational targets through 2030. The plan, detailed at the company's Sept. 23 Investor Day, focuses on expanding margins, growing its global restaurant footprint, and leveraging technology to enhance efficiency.
Key Financial Targets
The company laid out a concrete set of financial goals it aims to achieve by 2030, signaling a strong focus on profitability and cash flow. Key targets announced by McDonald's include:
- Operating Margin: An increase to the low-to-mid 50% range.
- Free Cash Flow Conversion: A target in the mid-to-high 80% range.
- Unit Growth: New restaurant openings are expected to contribute nearly 2.5% to systemwide sales growth in 2027, moderating to approximately 2% by 2030.
- Administrative Costs: General and administrative expenses are projected to fall to approximately 1.9% of systemwide sales.
At the restaurant level, McDonald's is aiming for approximately 250 basis points of gross efficiency gains, which it estimates would translate to an annual cash flow benefit of roughly $100,000 for an average U.S. location.
Strategy and Investments
AdUnderpinning these targets is a strategy built on four pillars: Menu, Consumer, Restaurant, and People. A significant component involves substantial co-investment with its franchisees, with McDonald's planning to provide approximately $8.5 billion in total partnering support through 2036, with roughly $5 billion of that deployed by 2030.
On the menu front, the company aims to gain 1.5 percentage points of market share in both the chicken and beverage categories by 2030, while defending its core position in beef. The strategy also includes a major technology push with the rollout of ArchIQ, a generative AI tool being deployed across U.S. and International Operated Markets to support the broader efficiency goals.
Market Context and Reaction
McDonald's enters this strategic period from a position of significant scale, serving over 70 million customers daily across more than 46,000 restaurants and supported by nearly 220 million active loyalty members. This existing digital and physical infrastructure is the foundation for its growth ambitions.
Investors appeared to react positively to the long-term plan. According to Investing.com, shares of McDonald's were trading up 1.09% at $253.07 in pre-market hours on Sept. 23. The announcement comes after the stock has been under pressure in 2026, hitting a 52-week low earlier in the month, providing a potentially favorable backdrop for the new targets.
