Amazon Faces Proposed Class-Action Lawsuit Alleging Pregnancy Discrimination

Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) is the subject of a proposed class-action lawsuit filed Tuesday in a New York federal court, which alleges the company systematically discriminates against its pregnant warehouse employees.
The complaint, brought by four former employees, claims the retail giant routinely violates federal and state worker protection laws.
Details of the Allegations
According to the complaint filed in Brooklyn federal court, Amazon denies pregnant workers basic, legally required accommodations. The lawsuit challenges the company's alleged policies of threatening and frequently firing pregnant employees who take time off, and of demanding medical documentation for those who request accommodations.
Specific claims cited in the court filing include the denial of:
- Access to chairs
- Adequate bathroom and water breaks
- Time off for prenatal appointments
Ad"Amazon violates the law at every turn," the complaint stated, as reported by Reuters.
Legal Claims and Potential Damages
The lawsuit asserts that Amazon's alleged practices are in violation of both federal and New York state worker protection laws. The plaintiffs are seeking to represent a class of similarly affected workers.
The suit seeks unspecified damages, including lost pay and benefits, as well as punitive damages. Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the matter, according to the original report.
