UPS Becomes Exclusive Returns Provider for TikTok Shop in U.S.

Summary
United Parcel Service announced a partnership with TikTok Shop to provide no-box, no-label returns, a strategic move to capture a larger share of the high-margin reverse logistics market.
United Parcel Service (UPS) will become the exclusive provider of no-box, no-label return services for sellers on TikTok Shop in the United States, the companies announced Tuesday. The partnership utilizes UPS's Happy Returns service to streamline the returns process for the rapidly growing social commerce platform.
A Strategic Push into Reverse Logistics
This collaboration underscores a broader strategy by logistics giants like UPS and its competitor FedEx to expand into reverse logistics, which often yields higher profit margins than standard e-commerce deliveries. The move targets the significant costs retailers face from returned goods.
According to returns-management software firm Blue Yonder, managing returns costs retailers an average of 27% of a product’s purchase price. The scale of the issue is substantial, with the National Retail Federation reporting approximately $850 billion in total retail returns in 2025 and nearly 20% of all online sales being sent back.
How the Service Works
Under the agreement, shoppers on TikTok Shop can bring unwanted items to nearly 10,000 Happy Returns drop-off locations, including The UPS Store, Ulta Beauty, and Staples. The process is designed for convenience:
Ad- Customers do not need a box or a shipping label.
- Items are scanned by store employees, bagged, and consolidated into larger boxes.
- These consolidated shipments are then sent daily to processing hubs.
The service is available to participating sellers on the platform, regardless of whether they manage their own fulfillment or use TikTok Shop’s fulfillment services, the companies stated.
Benefits for Sellers and Shoppers
TikTok Shop, which launched in the U.S. in September 2023, aims to enhance its user experience through the partnership. "Our collaboration with Happy Returns builds on our commitment to making the returns experience faster, hassle free, and more trustworthy for our shoppers," said Patrick Nommensen, TikTok Shop’s president of strategic initiatives.
For sellers, the service promises to reduce return fraud, accelerate inventory turnaround, and provide a better overall customer experience, according to David Sobie, co-founder and CEO of Happy Returns. The Happy Returns system uses artificial intelligence to help identify suspicious packages and flag them for human review before refunds are issued.
