Tokenized Stocks See $3 Billion in Weekly Volume But Retain Just 5% of Capital On-Chain, Grayscale Reports

Background

The tokenized stock market is experiencing a surge in trading activity, with weekly spot volumes approaching $3 billion in early August, yet the vast majority of this capital is failing to stay within the on-chain ecosystem. According to a research report published Thursday by Grayscale, only about 5% of the funds flowing into tokenized stocks are being retained for other on-chain financial activities.

High Volume, Low On-Chain Utility

The report, which cites data from Woofun AI and Allium, highlights a significant disconnect between trading volume and on-chain liquidity. While platforms like Robinhood Chain, BNB Chain, and Solana dominate the trading landscape, the capital is not being effectively repurposed for decentralized finance (DeFi) applications.

Key findings from the report include:

  • Weekly Spot Volume: Peaked near $3 billion in early August.
  • Capital Retention: Only 5% of inflows are used in on-chain financial protocols.
  • Total Value Locked (TVL): Tokenized stock TVL surpassed $110 million at the end of August, a figure dwarfed by the weekly trading turnover.

Zach Pandl, Grayscale's Head of Research, noted that investors appear to be primarily motivated by the convenience of all-hours trading and easy access rather than a desire for deeper financial integration, such as using the assets as collateral in DeFi lending.

Investor Behavior and Regulatory Bottlenecks

The data suggests that high trading volumes are not translating into a robust collateral base for the broader DeFi ecosystem. For instance, much of the traffic on Robinhood Chain's Arbitrum deployment is reportedly driven by meme coins rather than its tokenized stock offerings. While some Solana-based lending protocols like Kamino and Jupiter have seen deposits grow tenfold over the past year, this activity is not necessarily linked to the use of tokenized equities.

The core obstacle preventing institutional adoption and deeper on-chain integration remains regulatory uncertainty. According to the report, the lack of a comprehensive regulatory framework makes it difficult for institutions to confidently bring assets onto their balance sheets on-chain. Progress is being discussed, with an SEC advisory committee supporting simultaneous settlement to eliminate delivery risk, a sentiment echoed by Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev, who has called for closing regulatory gaps.
