Background

Uncertainty surrounding a potential shift in how Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) manages its vast Bitcoin holdings is creating short-term price volatility for the cryptocurrency, according to a recent analyst note from Standard Chartered. The bank maintains that clearer communication from the corporate holder could remove the overhang, reiterating its $100,000 year-end price forecast for Bitcoin.

Strategy's Shifting Approach

Geoff Kendrick, an analyst at Standard Chartered, noted that Strategy, the largest corporate holder with 843,775 BTC, appears to be pivoting from its long-held "never sell Bitcoin" mantra. This change is reportedly driven by a decline in the company's mNAV metric—its enterprise value divided by its Bitcoin holdings—to a ratio of approximately 1.0.

At this level, the previous model of issuing new shares to fund Bitcoin purchases becomes less effective, prompting a new approach. The firm is now believed to be shifting toward using its Bitcoin reserves as backing for its preferred stock (STRC), which the bank describes as a credit product.

Market Implications and Outlook

This evolving strategy has introduced "near-term noise" for the Bitcoin market, as investors await clarity on whether the company might sell some of its holdings, which represent over 4% of Bitcoin's total eventual supply. Kendrick stated that effective communication from Strategy's management is "key to reassuring markets that wholesale selling is unlikely."

According to the note, successful signaling could remove the pressure for the company to sell any of its Bitcoin. Standard Chartered also highlighted the value in Strategy's preferred stock (STRC), which has approximately $10 billion in notional value outstanding. The bank believes the stock is "heavily over-collateralised" and should rebound to $100 from its current price of around $90.

Bitcoin Price Forecast Unchanged

Despite the short-term uncertainty, Standard Chartered characterized the recent weakness in Bitcoin's price as "mostly noise rather than a signal of BTC's medium-term direction." The bank is holding firm on its price targets for the digital asset, maintaining its forecast for Bitcoin to reach $100,000 by year-end.

Key figures from the analyst note include:

  • Strategy's BTC Holdings: 843,775 BTC
  • Market Share: Over 4% of total possible supply
  • Analyst: Geoff Kendrick, Standard Chartered
  • BTC Year-End Forecast: $100,000
