S&P Revises Boyd Gaming Outlook to Positive on Debt Management Discipline

S&P Global Ratings revised its outlook on Boyd Gaming Corporation (NYSE:BYD) to positive from stable on Tuesday, signaling confidence in the casino operator's financial management. The agency affirmed Boyd's 'BB' issuer credit rating, pointing to the company's consistent balance-sheet discipline throughout an elevated cycle of capital investment.
Key Drivers Behind the Outlook
The positive outlook reflects Boyd's success in maintaining adjusted leverage below 3x since 2021, a key threshold for the rating agency. S&P noted this discipline has been sustained even as the company pursues shareholder returns through share repurchases and invests in property developments.
Credit analysts project a temporary increase in Boyd's adjusted leverage from approximately 2.4x this year to around 2.7x in 2027. This anticipated rise is attributed to the funding of a $750 million casino resort development in Norfolk, Virginia. However, S&P expects debt ratios to return to the mid-2x range after the new facility's scheduled opening in November 2027.
Financial Performance and Projections
Boyd's recent operating results have been mixed, according to S&P's analysis. Soft leisure demand in Downtown Las Vegas and at The Orleans property has been a localized drag, but this has been largely offset by resilient performance at its Midwest and South regional casinos.
AdS&P provided the following financial forecasts for Boyd Gaming:
- 2026 Adjusted EBITDA: A decline of roughly 2%, reflecting lingering cost-of-living pressures on visitors and residual effects from the July 2025 FanDuel transaction.
- 2027 Adjusted EBITDA: A rebound with 4% growth, driven by returns from capital projects at its Suncoast and Cadence Crossing properties.
- Free Operating Cash Flow: A substantial expansion from an estimated $300 million in 2027 to approximately $840 million in 2028, following the conclusion of major construction in Virginia.
Path to a Rating Change
S&P indicated that a credit rating upgrade could occur if destination demand in Nevada recovers and Boyd demonstrates a sufficient leverage cushion below its 3x downgrade threshold. This would provide the company with greater financial flexibility to navigate potential cash flow volatility.
Conversely, the outlook could revert to stable if management adopts a more aggressive share buyback strategy or if broader macroeconomic headwinds lead to a sustained decline in operating performance. The positive outlook hinges on the company continuing its current path of prudent financial management.
