Scholar Rock Stock Jumps on Early FDA Approval for Spinal Muscular Atrophy Drug

Scholar Rock Holding Corp. (NASDAQ: SRRK) shares surged 9.1% in pre-market trading to $60.45 after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved its spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) treatment. The approval, announced after Friday's market close, transforms the company from a clinical-stage developer into a commercial biopharmaceutical entity.
FDA Greenlights First-in-Class Treatment
The FDA approved ISEMBYLD (apitegromab-mstn) as the first and only muscle-targeted therapy for SMA. The treatment is indicated for adults and children two years and older who are already receiving an SMN2-targeted therapy.
This regulatory milestone was reached ahead of the scheduled Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA) deadline of September 30, 2026. According to the announcement, the drug received a broad label that met or exceeded analyst and company expectations, a key factor for its commercial potential.
Wall Street Raises Price Targets
The approval triggered a uniformly positive response from Wall Street analysts, who swiftly upgraded their price targets on the stock. Key analyst actions include:
Ad- Truist Securities: Maintained a Buy rating and raised its price target to $76 from $55, anticipating broad patient uptake.
- Raymond James: Maintained a Strong Buy rating and lifted its target to $72 from $65. Analysts at the firm project ISEMBYLD revenues could reach approximately $2.2 billion by 2035.
- Citi: Maintained its Buy rating, increasing its price target to $74 from $60.
Market Impact and Outlook
Scholar Rock's gains stood in sharp contrast to the broader market, with the S&P 500, Dow Jones, and NASDAQ all trading lower. This underscores that the stock's movement was driven entirely by its company-specific catalyst rather than a market-wide trend.
Investors also appear confident in the company's ability to execute a successful launch. Scholar Rock has highlighted its commercial readiness, supported by two independent fill-finish facilities and a cash position of approximately $492 million. The stock is now approaching its 52-week high of $61.76, reflecting the significance of this regulatory achievement.
