Background

Reddit Inc. (RDDT) continued to capture a larger share of the social media advertising market in the second quarter, according to a new report from Jefferies based on conversations with advertising agencies. The findings come as agencies report an overall acceleration in digital advertising growth in Q2 compared to the first quarter, with social media platforms showing particular strength.

Drivers of Reddit's Growth

Ad agencies cited several key factors driving the shift in budgets toward Reddit. The platform's gains were primarily attributed to its unique strengths, including:

  • Contextual targeting capabilities
  • Access to a high-intent audience
  • The ability to provide incremental reach beyond other platforms

According to the agencies surveyed by Jefferies, this increased spending on Reddit came at the expense of other social media sites. The most frequently mentioned platforms losing share were LinkedIn for business-to-business campaigns, as well as Pinterest, Snapchat, and X.

Product Adoption and Future Outlook

While adoption is growing, advertisers are primarily using Reddit for mid- and upper-funnel marketing objectives, Jefferies noted. The uptake of newer, low-funnel products like dynamic product ads remains in the early stages, with most advertisers still in a "test-and-learn" phase for these performance-oriented offerings.

Reddit's recent investments in automation tools, such as its "Max" features and a Shopify integration, are reportedly lowering the barrier to entry for smaller advertisers. This is helping to drive adoption among small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs).

Looking ahead, agencies expressed significant interest in testing Reddit’s forthcoming search advertising product, which is expected to launch late this year or early in the next. Jefferies suggests this new product could enhance targeting and brand safety, helping Reddit compete for budgets typically reserved for search and performance marketing.
