Qualcomm, Lumentum, and Corning Unveil Joint Optical Interconnect for AI Scale-Out Systems

Summary
Tech giants Qualcomm, Lumentum, and Corning have announced a collaboration to demonstrate a high-density, die-to-die optical interconnect designed to meet the escalating bandwidth demands of artificial intelligence architectures.
Lumentum, Qualcomm, and Corning announced on Monday a joint demonstration of a new optical interconnect technology aimed at next-generation AI data centers. The collaboration, which will be showcased at the ECOC 2026 conference, targets the growing need for high-speed, low-power connections in AI scale-out architectures, sending shares of all three companies higher in pre-market trading.
The Technology Demonstration
The board-level demonstration integrates core technologies from each company to create a high-density, die-to-die (D2D) optical link. According to a joint statement, the key components include:
- Qualcomm (QCOM): A D2D interface IP subsystem.
- Lumentum (LITE): A VCSEL-based optical interconnect platform.
- Corning (GLW): Multimode fiber connectivity components.
This setup is designed for future Co-Packaged Optics (CPO) and Near-Package Optics (NPO) implementations, which place optical components closer to the main processing chips to improve performance and efficiency. The architecture also supports emerging D2D interface standards like UCIe (Universal Chiplet Interconnect Express).
Addressing AI Bottlenecks
AdThe collaboration aims to solve a critical bottleneck in AI infrastructure, as the data transfer demands of large-scale systems are pushing beyond the physical limits of traditional electrical connections. The companies stated the new optical architecture enables "highly scalable bandwidth density" by extending high-speed connections over optical links spanning tens of meters while maintaining low latency and low power consumption.
Corning's contribution of multimode fiber glass ferrules provides the high-density fiber connections necessary for the system. This highlights the increasing importance of optical fiber density as interconnects move closer to the computing silicon in advanced packaging environments.
Market Impact and Outlook
The announcement was met with a positive investor response. In pre-market trading on Monday, shares of Corning rose 3%, Lumentum gained 2.4%, and Qualcomm was up 1.3%.
"This demonstration showcases how Lumentum’s 1060 nm VCSEL platform brings high-density optical connectivity closer to AI compute," said Matt Sysak, Chief Technology Officer at Lumentum. The partnership represents a significant step toward developing the foundational hardware required to support the exponential growth in AI and machine learning workloads.
