Nutanix Stock Gains as Guggenheim Initiates 'Buy' Rating, Citing VMware Share Capture

Shares of Nutanix Inc. (NASDAQ:NTNX) rose 1.6% on Monday after Guggenheim initiated coverage on the enterprise cloud software provider with a Buy rating and a $100 price target. The firm's bullish outlook is based on Nutanix's potential to win significant market share from its primary competitor, VMware.
The VMware Replacement Thesis
According to Guggenheim analyst Howard Ma, Nutanix stands as the "only viable enterprise-wide replacement for VMware" in the hyperconverged infrastructure market, which he estimates is worth over $12 billion. The analysis suggests that VMware's recent strategic shifts, including aggressive price increases and mandatory product bundling, are actively pushing customers to seek alternatives.
This dynamic positions Nutanix to expand its presence in broader enterprise compute workloads, where its current market footprint remains in the single digits. Guggenheim also pointed to the growing adoption of Nutanix Cloud Clusters, a trend accelerated by high on-premise hardware costs that make public cloud solutions more economically attractive for businesses.
Accelerated Growth and Valuation
AdGuggenheim's model projects that these competitive gains will drive an acceleration in Nutanix's financial performance. The firm forecasts total revenue growth could reach 17% this year, significantly outpacing the consensus expectation of 13%. By fiscal 2029, Guggenheim sees revenue growth hitting 20%.
This growth trajectory could elevate Nutanix to a "Rule of 50" company, a benchmark combining revenue growth and free cash flow margin that would surpass the company's own internal targets. Guggenheim noted that while some revenue recognition has been deferred due to long deployment cycles, these headwinds are expected to reverse and become tailwinds as early as this year. At a valuation of 17 times projected fiscal 2028 free cash flow, the firm views the stock's risk-reward profile as favorable.
Future Catalysts
Beyond the core virtualization market, Guggenheim identified additional opportunities that could provide further upside for Nutanix. These include increased cross-selling momentum in modern Kubernetes infrastructure and the development of turnkey agentic AI offerings, positioning the company to capitalize on emerging technology trends.
