Netflix Faces Investor Scrutiny on Engagement and Growth Ahead of Q2 Earnings

Summary
Netflix is set to report its second-quarter results this week, with investors closely watching for a viable long-term growth strategy as user engagement falters and the ad-supported tier's performance comes under pressure.
Netflix is facing heightened investor scrutiny over its long-term growth strategy as it prepares to report second-quarter earnings on Thursday, with concerns mounting over faltering user engagement and the performance of its advertising business. The streaming giant's stock has fallen by more than a fifth this year amid doubts about its ability to sustain momentum after the initial benefits from its password-sharing crackdown and price hikes begin to fade.
Earnings Expectations and Ad-Tier Scrutiny
Analysts polled by LSEG are forecasting a slowdown in Netflix's growth trajectory. Key expectations for the second quarter include:
- Revenue: A 13.6% rise to $12.59 billion, which would mark its slowest growth in over four quarters.
- Adjusted Earnings Per Share: A total of 79 cents.
A key focus for investors will be the company's advertising business, which is seen as a crucial pillar for future expansion. The ad tier is expected to generate $705.8 million in revenue. However, its growth has not met earlier, more bullish expectations. "We had to lower our (advertising) forecast," Emarketer analyst Ross Benes said, noting the business has not grown as strongly as many analysts originally anticipated.
The Engagement Challenge
AdThe pressure on new initiatives comes as Netflix grapples with retaining viewer attention amid intense competition from traditional media companies, YouTube, and mobile viewing. According to a Bloomberg News report earlier this month, the company is struggling with audience retention for subsequent seasons of its hit shows, with series like "The Night Agent" and "Beef" reportedly losing about half or more of their viewers after their initial season.
This trend highlights a core strategic challenge for the company as it matures. "The company has moved from disruption to dominance, and the challenge now is to sustain momentum from a much larger base," said PP Foresight analyst Paolo Pescatore.
Strategic Moves into Live Events and M&A
To boost engagement and attract advertisers, Netflix is making a significant push into live events and exploring acquisitions. CNBC has reported that the company is considering a bid for the U.S. broadcast rights for the 2030 and 2034 FIFA World Cup.
The same report indicated Netflix was in talks to acquire the online film platform Letterboxd. While recent industry moves, such as Comcast’s NBCUniversal spinoff, have fueled speculation about larger deals, some analysts believe Netflix will likely continue to focus on smaller, strategic acquisitions.
