MicroStrategy Stock Slides on Bitcoin Weakness, Pause in Purchases, and MSCI Index Risk

MicroStrategy (MSTR) shares declined sharply in morning trading on October 26, pressured by a combination of softness in the price of Bitcoin, a pause in the company's aggressive cryptocurrency accumulation strategy, and a looming risk of exclusion from major MSCI indexes.
Shares of the business intelligence firm, widely viewed by investors as a leveraged proxy for Bitcoin, fell 5.1% to $138.63, according to a report from Investing.com. The sell-off follows a roughly 7.5% surge in the prior session, making profit-taking another likely contributor to the reversal.
A Confluence of Headwinds
The stock's decline is primarily linked to Bitcoin's price, which has been trading approximately 8% below its recent monthly high. This weakness directly impacts sentiment around MicroStrategy, whose corporate strategy is heavily tied to acquiring and holding the digital asset.
Adding to the pressure, the company disclosed it made no Bitcoin purchases or sales in the week of October 19 through October 25. This pause in its accumulation strategy has raised concerns among investors. Instead of buying more crypto, MicroStrategy used capital to repurchase approximately 2.07 million of its preferred shares for around $204.9 million, leaving its total holdings unchanged at 848,517 BTC.
Structural Risks and Market Context
AdA significant structural overhang is also weighing on the stock. In mid-October, index provider MSCI approved rule changes that could ultimately exclude non-operating companies, including Bitcoin treasury firms like MicroStrategy, from its indexes. This creates a potential for forced selling from passive funds that track these benchmarks.
Key dates for investors to watch regarding the MSCI rebalancing are:
- November 11: Final list of affected companies is expected to be announced.
- November 30: Changes are set to take effect after this date.
MicroStrategy's decline stands in contrast to the broader U.S. equity market, where the S&P 500 and Nasdaq both posted modest gains. This divergence highlights that the stock's performance is being driven by company-specific and cryptocurrency-related dynamics rather than any macroeconomic headwind. The sell-off comes ahead of the company's third-quarter earnings report, which is due on October 30.
