Verizon Stock Slides Despite Raised Guidance Amid Competition Concerns

Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ) shares declined in Monday trading despite the company raising its full-year guidance for the third consecutive quarter. The negative market reaction followed a third-quarter earnings report that showed a miss on revenue and highlighted investor concerns about broader competitive pressures in the telecommunications sector.
Mixed Earnings and Upgraded Outlook
For the third quarter, Verizon reported adjusted earnings per share of $1.31, beating analyst expectations of $1.28, according to Investing.com data. However, quarterly revenue of $34.31 billion fell short of the estimated $34.77 billion, marking the company's second consecutive revenue miss.
Despite the revenue shortfall, Verizon upgraded its full-year outlook. The company's management now expects:
- Postpaid phone net additions between 1.1 million and 1.2 million.
- Adjusted EPS growth of 7.0% to 7.5%, up from a previous range of 6.0% to 7.0%.
- Free cash flow growth of approximately 12%, an increase from the prior 9% to 10% forecast.
Competition Fears Overshadow Results
AdThe market's muted response suggests investors are focused on industry-wide headwinds rather than Verizon's operational performance. The stock had already been under pressure following an October 23 Bloomberg report that SpaceX is in negotiations for access to a large number of cell sites, a move that could pave the way for a fourth national carrier.
This sentiment was reinforced by the market's reaction to rival AT&T, which also saw its stock fall after reporting strong results and raising its own guidance. The pattern indicates that concerns about future competition are currently outweighing solid execution from incumbent carriers.
Valuation vs. Headwinds
Verizon's current valuation presents a conflicting picture for investors. The stock trades at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 8.8x and offers a substantial dividend yield of 6.3%, supported by strong free cash flow. Proponents argue the selloff is disconnected from the company's improving operational turnaround.
However, significant risks remain. The company carries a high debt-to-equity ratio of 186.3% as of June 30, and revenue growth remains modest. The uncertainty surrounding potential new market entrants like SpaceX could continue to suppress the stock's valuation multiple, creating a challenging environment for share price appreciation.
