Background

JPMorgan has upgraded its rating on Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META) to Overweight from Neutral, citing the company's accelerated push into artificial intelligence as a key catalyst for future growth beyond its core advertising business. The bank also raised its price target on the stock to $820 from a previous $640.

The AI Thesis

In a note to clients, JPMorgan analyst Doug Anmuth highlighted Meta's progress in developing frontier AI models and agents. The analyst stated that Meta's superintelligence lab has effectively reached the forefront of AI development within a year, pointing to an increasing pace of model releases.

Key points from the analysis include:

  • The recent Muse Spark 1.3 model is seen as competitive with leading models from competitors like Anthropic and OpenAI.
  • An upcoming model, codenamed Watermelon, is expected to unlock further opportunities in consumer products, user engagement, and advertising efficiency.
  • The Muse AI agent has shown strong early user traction, reportedly reaching as high as the No. 3 spot in the U.S. app store shortly after its release.

Financial Outlook and Valuation

While direct monetization of AI agents is not an immediate priority, JPMorgan sees long-term potential from commissions and subscriptions. The new $820 price target is based on a valuation of 23 times the bank's 2028 earnings per share estimate of $35.44, a figure Anmuth suggested "could prove conservative."

The bank also anticipates a significant increase in Meta's capital expenditures to support its AI ambitions, forecasting capex of $243 billion in 2027 and $284 billion in 2028. Both projections are above current consensus estimates, signaling the scale of investment required.

Core Business and Market Context

Despite the focus on AI, JPMorgan noted that "there’s still meaningful headroom in core advertising," driven by improved targeting and AI-powered content creation tools. The upgrade comes as Meta's stock has remained roughly flat for the year, underperforming the S&P 500's 12% gain, according to the note. However, the shares have risen about 20% from recent lows.
