JPMorgan Downgrades Chewy to Neutral on Muted Growth Outlook

JPMorgan has downgraded shares of online pet retailer Chewy (CHWY) to Neutral from Overweight, citing concerns that persistent macroeconomic pressures are constraining the company's organic growth. The move suggests a more cautious outlook on the stock, even as the bank acknowledges Chewy's strong operational performance.
Rating and Price Target
In a note issued Friday, JPMorgan analyst Doug Anmuth set a December 2027 price target of $24 for Chewy's stock. The valuation is based on a multiple of approximately seven times the firm's 2028 adjusted EBITDA estimate of $1.2 billion.
The downgrade follows Chewy's recent earnings report, after which its shares fell about 9%. JPMorgan pointed to continued pressure on organic growth and softness in consumer spending on discretionary and premium pet products as key factors behind the ratings change.
Strong Execution vs. Weak Backdrop
Despite the downgrade, JPMorgan credited Chewy with strong execution in a difficult market. The analyst highlighted several positive operational trends, noting that the company is performing well on its own initiatives.
Ad- Market Share: Chewy is outpacing the broader pet market by a factor of two to three times.
- Profitability: Second-quarter adjusted EBITDA margin of 6.8% beat guidance, partly due to one-time benefits but also supported by sponsored ads, fulfillment efficiencies, and AI-driven productivity.
- Guidance: The company raised its full-year sales outlook by about $40 million at the midpoint.
- Capital Returns: Chewy repurchased $200 million of its stock in the last quarter.
Outlook for Investors
Chewy is also leveraging technology to improve efficiency, with AI initiatives expected to generate cost savings scaling to about $50 million annually by fiscal 2027. However, JPMorgan's decision to move to the sidelines indicates that these internal strengths are not enough to fully offset the external economic headwinds in the near term.
The Neutral rating suggests that while the bank remains positive on Chewy's market position and profitability, the muted growth outlook warrants a less bullish stance until the macroeconomic picture for consumer spending improves.
