J.P. Morgan Initiates Atalaya Mining at 'Overweight' on Touro Copper Project Potential

Summary
J.P. Morgan began coverage of Atalaya Mining with an 'overweight' rating and a £13.30 price target, forecasting significant copper volume growth driven by the company's low-cost Touro project in Spain.
J.P. Morgan has initiated coverage of Atalaya Mining (LON:ATYM) with an "overweight" rating, citing significant growth potential from the company's Touro copper project in Spain. In a research note dated September 22, the bank set a December 2027 price target of £13.30 per share, implying approximately 30% upside from the stock's September 21 closing price of 1,015 pence.
Touro Project to Drive Copper Growth
J.P. Morgan's positive thesis hinges on Atalaya's Spanish copper pipeline, which the bank expects will drive copper volume growth of about 10% annually through 2031. The primary catalyst is the development of the Touro project in Galicia, which is forecast to add approximately 30,000 tonnes of annual copper production.
The bank's analysts, who expect permitting approval for Touro in the second half of 2026, highlighted the project's attractive economics. They estimate Touro's capital intensity at roughly $12,000 per tonne, comparing favorably to an average of over $30,000 per tonne for typical greenfield copper projects. J.P. Morgan's base case assumes a capital expenditure of about €300 million for the project.
Valuation and Price Target Details
According to the note, Atalaya currently trades at a discount to its mid-cap copper peers, with an estimated 2026 enterprise value-to-EBITDA (EV/EBITDA) multiple of 4.5 times and a 2027 multiple of 3.0 times.
AdJ.P. Morgan's £13.30 price target is based on an equal weighting of two valuation methodologies: a 6.0 times multiple on the bank's estimated 2028 EV/EBITDA and a base-case net present value (NPV) calculation using an 8% discount rate.
Key Risks and Financial Position
J.P. Morgan identified permitting and execution at Touro as the key drivers, and potential risks, for Atalaya's growth outlook. The project's value could be diminished by permitting delays, higher-than-expected capital costs, or commissioning problems. The company also faces concentration risk, as it remains reliant on its single Riotinto asset until Touro reaches commercial production.
In a bear-case scenario where the Touro project fails to secure permits, the bank estimates a fair value of approximately £11.20 per share, which would still imply about 10% upside from current levels. The note also stated that Atalaya held a net cash position of €318 million at the end of the second quarter of 2026.
