IREN Shares Plunge Over 40% Despite Securing Major AI Data Center Contracts

Shares of IREN Ltd. (NASDAQ: IREN) have plunged more than 40% over the past month to 52-week lows, creating a stark contrast between the company's operational progress and its mounting financial pressures. The former Bitcoin miner's aggressive pivot to AI data center infrastructure has secured major contracts but has also saddled the company with significant debt and a massive capital spending plan.
An Ambitious Pivot to AI
IREN has rapidly transitioned its business model, decommissioning cryptocurrency mining hardware to install high-performance NVIDIA GPU clusters for AI cloud services. This strategic shift reached a key milestone in the fiscal fourth quarter, with AI Cloud revenue hitting $70.5 million and accounting for 51.4% of total revenue, officially surpassing its legacy mining operations for the first time.
The company has validated its new strategy by securing high-profile customers. IREN reports a long-term agreement with Microsoft estimated at $9.7 billion through 2031 and a new multi-year cloud contract with AI firm Anthropic. This has boosted its contracted annual recurring revenue (ARR), which is expected to surpass $4 billion by the end of calendar 2026, according to company management.
Mounting Financial Headwinds
Despite the contract momentum, the financial cost of this industrial overhaul is becoming apparent. In its latest quarterly results, IREN's revenue of $137.2 million fell 12.7% short of analyst expectations, as mining hardware was taken offline faster than AI servers could be installed. The company reported a steep net loss of $684 million, largely driven by $552.5 million in non-cash asset impairments on retired equipment.
AdMore significantly, the company's balance sheet is under strain. IREN’s total outstanding debt climbed to $7.84 billion, and management has guided for an unprecedented $25 billion to $30 billion in capital expenditures for fiscal 2027. This heavy spending comes as a recent Gartner research report warned that over 80% of independent AI cloud providers could cease operating as standalone entities by 2030 due to soaring costs.
A Divided Outlook for Investors
The market is sharply divided on IREN's prospects. While Wall Street analysts maintain an average price target of $77.81, implying over 200% upside, quantitative models suggest a more cautious view. According to InvestingPro's analysis, which aggregates six financial models, IREN's intrinsic fair value is estimated at $25.00 per share, indicating minimal upside from its recent trading price of around $24.80.
For investors, the situation presents a classic risk-reward scenario. IREN has secured top-tier customers and critical power infrastructure, giving it a competitive advantage. However, its substantial debt load, deeply negative free cash flow, and immense capital requirements create significant execution risk, leaving little room for error if project timelines slip or market conditions deteriorate.
