Inditex Shares Rise After Barclays Upgrade on Pricing Power, Margin Outlook

Summary

Shares of Zara-owner Inditex climbed after Barclays upgraded the stock to 'Overweight,' citing the retailer's strong pricing power and potential for mid-term earnings growth ahead of market consensus.

Background

Shares of Inditex, the parent company of fast-fashion giant Zara, rose as much as 3.4% on Monday after analysts at Barclays upgraded the stock and raised their price target. The bank expressed confidence in the retailer's ability to leverage its pricing power and control inventory to drive earnings growth.

Barclays Lifts Rating and Price Target

Barclays upgraded Inditex to "Overweight" from a previous "Equal Weight" rating and increased its price target to €62.50 from €56, according to a note published Monday. The new target implies approximately 14.8% upside from the stock's closing price on July 24.

The bank noted that Inditex's stock had been down 2% year-to-date, viewing this muted performance as a buying opportunity. In response to the upgrade, the shares climbed to a session high of €56.29.

The Bull Case for Inditex

Barclays' optimistic outlook is based on the view that Inditex is well-positioned to outperform in the current economic climate. The bank's analysts are more bullish than the market on the company's mid-term profitability, forecasting that Inditex's earnings for fiscal years 2026-28 will be 2% ahead of consensus.

Key drivers behind the upgrade include:

  • Pricing Power: Strong ability to manage pricing and inventory in an inflationary cost environment.
  • Shareholder Returns: Potential for a mid-teens total shareholder return (TSR) over the next 12 months, driven by an estimated 11% EPS growth and a 4% dividend yield.
  • Valuation: The stock's valuation, at approximately 22.3 times its calendar year 2027 price-to-earnings multiple, looks "relatively attractive" when adjusted for growth, Barclays said.

Outlook and Potential Risks

Barclays identified the company's upcoming second-quarter results, due on September 9, as an early test of its long-term growth algorithm. The bank expects Inditex to report 8.8% growth in local currency for the May-to-July period, in line with the first quarter.

However, the analysts also flagged several potential headwinds. These include the risk of "too hot to shop" dynamics amid European heatwaves, fading support for U.S. consumers from tax refunds, and continued pressure on disposable income from high fuel prices. Barclays also expects gross margin expansion to slow as U.S. dollar tailwinds fade.
