HPE Stock Downgraded by Evercore ISI on Valuation Concerns After Sharp Rally

Summary
Evercore ISI has lowered its rating on Hewlett Packard Enterprise to 'In Line' from 'Outperform,' citing the stock's significant year-to-date rally and a more balanced risk/reward outlook. The firm maintained its $65 price target but noted fewer near-term catalysts.
Evercore ISI on Monday downgraded its rating for Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) to In Line from a previous Outperform, signaling that the stock's recent powerful rally has left it fairly valued. The investment firm maintained its $65 price target on HPE shares.
Valuation Reaches Full Mark
The downgrade follows a period of significant outperformance for the enterprise technology company. According to Evercore's note, HPE shares had surged 158.5% year-to-date as of September 11, vastly outpacing the S&P 500's 11.9% gain over the same period.
This run-up has pushed the stock's valuation to 13 times projected fiscal 2027 earnings, well above its five-year average of eight times. "We believe shares are fairly valued at current levels," the analysts wrote, viewing the risk/reward profile as more balanced after the rally.
A 'Tougher Setup' Ahead
While Evercore credited HPE's management with solid execution, particularly regarding the first year of its Juniper Networks integration, the firm sees fewer immediate catalysts to justify further multiple expansion. A key challenge lies in the networking division, which accounts for more than half of the company's segment operating profit.
AdDespite strong networking orders that grew 36% in the July quarter, pro forma revenue increased by only 10%, lagging competitors like Cisco and Arista. This suggests that supply constraints may be limiting profitability. "From here, however, we see a tougher setup," Evercore stated, explaining its decision to "move to the sidelines."
Catalysts to Watch
Evercore outlined three key developments it would monitor before considering a more constructive stance on the stock:
- Continued progress on the Juniper integration and improvements in networking margins.
- Positive shifts in the company's product mix and margin quality.
- Tangible tailwinds from its "Helios opportunity," which the firm anticipates will materialize later in fiscal 2027 and 2028.
