Goldman Sachs Taps CATL, Zenergy as Top China Battery Stocks

Summary
Goldman Sachs has identified Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) and Jiangsu Zenergy as its top investment picks in China's battery sector, citing their strong positioning to capitalize on expanding electric vehicle and energy storage markets.
Goldman Sachs has named its top investment opportunities in China's burgeoning battery industry, highlighting market leader Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) and fast-growing competitor Jiangsu Zenergy. The investment bank's analysis underscores companies poised to benefit from robust demand in the electric vehicle (EV) and battery energy storage system (BESS) markets.
Industry Leader and High-Growth Challenger
Goldman's evaluation focused on key metrics including scale, technological leadership, cost structure, and growth potential, leading it to single out two distinct opportunities for investors.
Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL)
As the world's largest battery manufacturer, CATL (SZ:300750) is Goldman's top pick, praised for its dominant scale, advanced technology, and cost competitiveness. The bank noted that CATL's core EV battery business provides a strong earnings foundation, bolstered by a resilient market share.
A key driver for future value, according to the report, is CATL's strategic shift from selling cells to providing integrated energy solutions. Goldman Sachs believes this transition into BESS integration will lead to market share consolidation, higher project value, and stronger margins. The bank set a 12-month price target of RMB565 for its A-shares and HK$947 for its H-shares, based on a sum-of-the-parts valuation.
Jiangsu Zenergy Battery Technologies
AdGoldman identified Jiangsu Zenergy (HK:3677) as an "underappreciated high-growth EV battery platform." Despite being founded in 2019, the firm leverages expertise from its founding team's background at auto-component giant Fuyao Glass and is one of the few smaller players gaining share in China's consolidating market.
Analysts project Zenergy will see the "fastest EBITDA growth" in its coverage universe, driven by customer diversification, rising plant utilization, and early expansion into energy storage. Goldman Sachs maintains a Buy rating on the stock with a price target of HK$9, noting that it trades at a significant discount to its peers.
Market Outlook and Key Risks
The positive outlook for both companies is underpinned by the continued global expansion of EV adoption and the increasing need for large-scale energy storage systems. However, Goldman Sachs also outlined potential risks for investors to consider.
These include a slower-than-anticipated growth in global demand for EVs and energy storage, volatility in raw material costs, and intensifying competition within the battery manufacturing sector. These factors could impact profitability and growth trajectories for all companies in the industry.
