Geron Shares Tumble After Halting Late-Stage Myelofibrosis Drug Trial

Geron Corporation (Nasdaq: GERN) shares plunged in pre-market trading after the company announced it was discontinuing a late-stage clinical trial for its drug imetelstat in patients with myelofibrosis. The decision followed a recommendation from an independent monitoring committee that concluded the study was unlikely to demonstrate a survival benefit.
Trial Halted on Efficacy Concerns
Geron disclosed it would halt its Phase 3 IMpactMF trial based on the advice of an independent Data Monitoring Committee (DMC). The committee determined that the trial was unlikely to achieve its primary endpoint of overall survival.
Key details of the discontinued trial include:
- Drug: Imetelstat
- Indication: Myelofibrosis in patients who had relapsed after or were refractory to JAK inhibitor therapy.
- Patient Enrollment: 327 participants.
- Reason for Halt: Lack of efficacy, not safety. The company specified that no new safety signals were identified by the DMC.
Market Reaction
AdThe announcement triggered a sharp sell-off in the company's stock, which fell 10.4% to $1.03 in pre-open trading. The decline was preceded by a brief trading halt on the Nasdaq at 7:55 a.m. ET pending the news release.
The stock was already trading near its 52-week low of $1.04, a factor that likely intensified the negative reaction. The move was entirely company-driven, as the broader market, including the S&P 500 and Nasdaq, posted modest gains during the same session.
Strategic Setback for Geron
The trial's failure is a significant strategic blow, as a successful outcome in myelofibrosis would have represented a major commercial expansion for imetelstat. The drug is currently approved under the brand name RYTELO for patients with lower-risk myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS).
With this potential growth catalyst now removed, investor focus will likely shift entirely to the commercial performance and sales trajectory of RYTELO in its approved indication. The company's upcoming third-quarter earnings report will be a key event for assessing the drug's launch progress.
