Edenred Named Top Pick Over Pluxee by Morgan Stanley on Clearer Recovery Outlook

Summary
Morgan Stanley raised its price target for Edenred while cutting its target for Pluxee, citing Edenred's diversified business model and a more straightforward recovery path as key advantages in the employee benefits sector.
Morgan Stanley on Wednesday designated Edenred as its preferred stock in the employee benefits sector over rival Pluxee, arguing that Edenred offers a "cleaner recovery" and a more resilient business model. The investment bank raised its price target on Edenred while significantly reducing its outlook for Pluxee.
Price Target and Rating Adjustments
In a note to clients, Morgan Stanley detailed its updated views on the two companies, maintaining its core ratings but adjusting valuations:
- Edenred SA (EDEN): The firm's price target was increased to €34.00 from a previous €33.00, implying a potential upside of 38%. The "overweight" rating was maintained.
- Pluxee N.V. (PLX): The price target was cut to €15.50 from €21.00, implying an 18% upside. The "equal-weight" rating was reiterated.
The analysts stated that while the subsector is not structurally broken, they see Edenred as better positioned for a rebound.
Investment Thesis: Regulatory Risks Priced In
AdMorgan Stanley believes investors are overly focused on regulatory risks, which it argues are already reflected in the stocks' current valuations. The bank noted that even when assigning zero value to the companies' core Meal & Food businesses, the remaining operations trade at multiples that imply "severe regulatory outcomes are priced into both stocks."
The firm also pushed back on the market's assumption that the Benefits & Engagement segment is a no-growth business. It pointed to several offsetting growth levers, including low penetration among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), significant face-value increases in key markets like Italy and Belgium, and accelerated cross-selling opportunities.
Edenred's Diversification Advantage
A key differentiator for Edenred is its Mobility division, which represents a quarter of the group's EBIT and is "completely protected from the regulatory debate," according to the bank. This segment has delivered approximately 15% average organic growth over the past decade.
This diversification means Edenred could still achieve mid-single-digit top-line growth even if its Meal & Food business stalls. In contrast, Pluxee's "higher concentration in business exposed to regulatory changes limits our conviction on near-term upside, despite attractive valuation," the analysts wrote. Morgan Stanley also noted that recent private equity interest in the sector provides a new valuation floor, skewing the risk/reward profile to the upside.
