Citi Taps Tencent, Alibaba Among Top China Tech Picks on AI, Cloud Focus

Citigroup has identified its top five stock picks in the Chinese internet sector, signaling a strategic pivot towards companies focused on artificial intelligence and cloud computing. The bank's analysis suggests these areas offer more resilient growth prospects amid persistent headwinds from slowing e-commerce and advertising spending.
A Sector Divided by AI and Cloud
According to Citi's latest sector analysis, the key themes separating winners from laggards are now AI monetization and cloud computing. The investment bank noted that the broader industry continues to face challenges from soft consumer spending, which directly impacts e-commerce volumes and advertising budgets.
This environment favors companies with strong, company-specific growth drivers that are less dependent on the overall macroeconomic climate in China.
Citi's Five Key Selections
AdThe bank outlined five companies it favors based on these emerging themes:
- Tencent Holdings (0700.HK): Citi's thesis centers on Tencent's AI investments beginning to translate into business performance, supported by its robust gaming and social media franchises. The bank views Tencent's rising capital expenditure as a sign of confidence in its AI strategy.
- Alibaba Group (BABA): The focus has shifted to Alibaba's cloud division as its primary growth engine. This follows a fiscal first quarter where the Cloud Intelligence Group's revenue grew 26% year-over-year, providing a growth story somewhat insulated from sector-wide softness.
- Meituan (3690.HK): Citi highlighted a "profitability inflection" for the food-delivery giant. The bank believes the worst of the subsidy wars may be over, as Meituan’s core local-commerce business returned to profitability in the second quarter after three consecutive quarters of losses.
- PDD Holdings (PDD): The investment case is driven by the rapid international expansion of its Temu platform. Citi expects Temu's gross merchandise volume growth to offset a slowdown in its domestic grocery business.
- Meitu (1357.HK): Characterized as a pure AI-monetization play, Meitu's AI-powered content and image-editing tools represent the kind of growth story Citi favors. The company offers exposure to AI without the drag from advertising or e-commerce that affects larger platforms.
Market Implications
Citi's report underscores a potential rotation within the Chinese technology landscape, as investors seek out segments with durable growth drivers beyond consumer-led commerce. The analysis suggests that the ability to successfully monetize AI applications and scale cloud infrastructure will be critical performance differentiators for Chinese internet stocks moving forward.
