Citi Projects USD/JPY Could Reach 163 if Topix Index Hits 4,500

Citigroup analysts project the U.S. dollar could climb to ¥163 against the Japanese yen if Japan's broad Topix stock index surges to the 4,500 level, according to a research note published Thursday. The bank's analysis highlights the historical link between strong domestic equities and a weaker yen, driven by investor portfolio adjustments.
The Equity-Currency Link
Citi's model currently estimates a fair value for the USD/JPY pair at approximately ¥160 based on the Topix index's present level. The Topix, which tracks all domestic companies on the Tokyo Stock Exchange’s Prime Market, serves as a key barometer for Japanese equity performance.
The bank noted that historically high valuations for Japanese stocks have often prompted both domestic and overseas investors to rebalance their portfolios and execute hedge transactions. According to the note, these capital flows have likely amplified the yen's depreciation.
AdShifting Dynamics and Market Risks
However, Citi's analysts observed that the strong correlation between rising equities and a falling yen has loosened since 2024. The firm attributes this shift to a narrowing of the monetary policy gap between Japan and other major economies, as well as direct foreign exchange intervention by Japanese authorities to support the yen.
The report suggests that the current USD/JPY exchange rate already factors in some of the ongoing strength in Japanese equities. Citi warned that potential risks for further yen weakness could emerge from changes to the interest rate spread or a shift in Japan's official intervention policy, advising clients to maintain caution on the currency pair.
