Citi Forecasts USD/JPY Could Reach 163 if Topix Index Hits 4,500

The U.S. dollar could strengthen to ¥163 against the Japanese yen if Japan's Topix stock index climbs to the 4,500 level, according to a research note from Citi published Thursday. The bank's analysis highlights the historical link between surging Japanese equities and a weaker yen.
Citi's Analysis
Citi's current model, based on the performance of the Topix index, already estimates a fair value for the USD/JPY pair at around ¥160, the note stated. The firm explained that historically high levels for Japanese stocks have often triggered portfolio rebalancing and hedging activities from both domestic and overseas investors, a dynamic that has likely amplified the yen's depreciation.
The Topix is a broad market index that tracks all domestic companies listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange’s Prime Market and is considered a key barometer of Japanese equity performance.
Shifting Dynamics
However, Citi analysts noted that the strong correlation between a rising stock market and a falling yen has weakened since 2024. This shift is attributed to two primary factors:
Ad- The narrowing of the monetary policy gap between the U.S. and Japan.
- Foreign exchange intervention by Japanese authorities to support their currency.
Citi suggests the current USD/JPY exchange rate already anticipates some of the ongoing strength in the Japanese equity market.
Key Risks and Outlook
The bank warned that further yen weakness could be triggered by a change in the interest rate spread or a shift in the Japanese authorities' policy on currency intervention. Given these variables, the firm recommended that investors maintain a cautious stance on the currency pair.
