Citi Forecasts USD/JPY at 163 if Topix Stock Index Reaches 4,500

A significant rally in Japanese stocks could push the yen to new lows, with Citigroup forecasting the USD/JPY exchange rate could reach approximately ¥163 per dollar if the Topix index climbs to 4,500. The analysis, detailed in a research note released Thursday, highlights the close relationship between Japan's equity market performance and its currency.
Equity Rally's Impact on the Yen
According to Citi's model, the current fair value for USD/JPY based on the Topix index is already around ¥160. The firm explained that historically, high valuations for Japanese equities have prompted portfolio rebalancing and hedging transactions by both domestic and international investors. These activities have typically amplified the yen's depreciation.
The Topix, or Tokyo Stock Price Index, is a broad market gauge that tracks all domestic companies listed on the Prime Market section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange, serving as a key measure of Japanese equity performance.
Shifting Dynamics and Market Risks
AdCiti analysts noted that the strong correlation between rising stocks and a weakening yen has loosened since 2024. This shift is attributed to two main factors:
- The contraction in the monetary policy gap between the U.S. and Japan.
- Direct foreign exchange intervention by Japanese authorities to support the currency.
Despite this, the bank suggests that the current USD/JPY rate already anticipates some continued strength in Japanese equities. Citi warned that changes to the interest rate spread or Japan's policy on intervention could pose a risk of further yen weakness, recommending continued caution for investors trading the currency pair.
