Citadel Securities Sees 'Compelling' Case for Renewed Gold Investment

Summary
A strategist at Citadel Securities is advocating for adding structural exposure to gold, citing a rare convergence of five catalysts including dovish Fed expectations and bullish market positioning.
A top strategist at Citadel Securities is recommending investors add structural exposure to gold for the first time in 2026, describing the current environment as "one of the more compelling upside setups we have seen in precious metals in months."
In a note to clients, Scott Rubner outlined five converging catalysts that he believes create an asymmetric upside risk profile for both gold and silver.
Five Key Catalysts
The firm's bullish thesis rests on a simultaneous alignment of macroeconomic and market-specific factors. According to the analysis, these drivers are:
- Dovish Fed Repricing: Markets are increasingly pricing in a more accommodative Federal Reserve policy path, a tailwind for non-yielding assets like gold that is compounded by U.S. dollar weakness.
- Accelerating Central Bank Demand: Official-sector purchases are recovering globally, with data showing China has been accelerating its gold buying on a monthly basis since late 2024.
- Net-Short CTA Positioning: As of August 6, trend-following funds, or Commodity Trading Advisors (CTAs), held a net short position. Rubner views this as potential fuel for a rally, as a price breakout could force these funds to cover their shorts, adding to buying pressure.
- Bullish Options Signals: In the popular SPDR Gold Shares ETF (GLD), implied volatility is rising from a low base while put/call skew has inverted to its deepest level since February, a technical signal of growing bullish conviction.
- Untapped Retail Interest: Retail investors have largely been focused on the artificial intelligence trade, leaving a significant pool of potential buyers who could re-enter the precious metals market if momentum builds.
Market Positioning and Technicals
AdCitadel Securities highlighted specific dynamics in the derivatives markets for both gold and silver. The firm noted that the iShares Silver Trust (SLV) is exhibiting similar options behavior to GLD, with implied volatility lifting and skew "meaningfully inverting," suggesting the silver market is also repricing for potential upside.
The firm's analysis of CTA positioning suggests that many systematic funds are currently on the wrong side of a potential rally. "With positioning still offsides versus an improving macro backdrop, renewed upside momentum could drive systematic buying and add another source of demand," the note stated.
Broader Context
The call comes as concerns over Treasury and foreign exchange intervention reinforce gold's traditional role as a key reserve asset for global central banks. This narrative, combined with the potential for retail participation to re-accelerate, forms the core of what Rubner describes as a rare and powerful setup for precious metals.
