Cathay Pacific Named Top China Airline Pick by Citi on International Travel Strength

Citigroup has identified Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific as its top airline pick in the Asia-Pacific region, highlighting the carrier's strategic positioning to capitalize on the robust recovery in international and long-haul travel.
In a research note, the investment bank said it expects international air travel to be the primary growth driver for China-related aviation, creating a favorable environment for carriers with significant global networks.
Favorable International Dynamics
Citi's bullish case for Cathay Pacific is built on the expectation that long-haul carriers will gain stronger pricing power in the second half of 2026 and into 2027. Analysts believe this is due to international demand growing faster than the available widebody aircraft capacity.
The bank highlighted several factors supporting Cathay's outlook:
- Premium Travel Exposure: The airline is well-positioned in the premium international travel segment, which Citi expects to remain resilient, supporting higher yields and profitability.
- Strategic Hub: Its Hong Kong hub provides a key advantage for connecting international passengers with China-related traffic, bolstered by its cross-ownership structure with Air China.
- Traffic Spillover: Cathay may also benefit from long-haul connecting traffic being rerouted from the Middle East.
Domestic Market Headwinds
AdIn contrast, Citi holds a more cautious view on mainland Chinese airlines, which are more exposed to a domestic market that the bank views as oversupplied. Carriers such as Air China and China Southern generate over 70% of their passenger revenue from domestic routes.
The bank noted that expanding narrowbody fleets, along with an expected increase in COMAC aircraft deliveries from 2027, will likely limit the ability of these domestic-focused airlines to raise fares. This dynamic led Citi to suggest a pair trade, favoring Cathay Pacific over its mainland counterparts.
Valuation Outlook
According to Citi's analysis, Cathay Pacific's valuation appears attractive relative to its growth prospects. The bank's estimates place the carrier's valuation at:
- Price-to-Earnings (P/E) Ratio: 10.3x for 2026 and 8.8x for 2027.
- Price-to-Book (P/B) Ratio: 1.4x for 2026 and 1.3x for 2027.
- Return on Equity (ROE): A forecasted 16% for both 2026 and 2027.
These metrics underscore the bank's preference for Cathay Pacific, which it sees as better positioned to benefit from the prevailing trends in the global aviation sector.
