Barclays Upgrades Ageas Target, Cites Value in AXA Amid Neutral Sector View

Barclays reiterated its Neutral stance on the European insurance sector, noting that stable operating trends and below-average catastrophe losses should support earnings. In a new research note, the bank identified several key stocks with divergent outlooks, highlighting potential opportunities in Ageas and AXA while expressing caution on MAPFRE and Swiss Re.
Sector Outlook and Key Picks
Analysts at Barclays believe the sector's headline earnings will be underpinned by steady underlying performance and supportive market conditions. Heading into the next earnings season, the bank is focusing on four key insurers, each with a distinct investment thesis:
- Ageas (AGES): Overweight rating reiterated, price target increased.
- AXA (AXAF): Overweight rating maintained, cited for its attractive valuation.
- MAPFRE (MAP): Equal Weight rating maintained due to growth and profitability concerns.
- Swiss Re (SRENH): Underweight rating maintained, with risks seen in reinsurance pricing.
'Overweight' Opportunities
Barclays raised its price target on Ageas to €73 from €66.50, forecasting that higher cash remittances will support increased shareholder returns in 2026. The bank projects a first-half net operating profit of €757 million, driven by recent consolidations and stronger dividends from its China operations. However, it also anticipates the insurer's solvency ratio will decline to 197% from about 211% at the end of 2025, due to several one-off factors.
AdFor AXA, Barclays maintained its Overweight rating and a €47.5 price target, arguing that the stock's valuation remains "undemanding." The analysts expect AXA's market-implied cost of equity to converge with its peers over time, aided by its significant property-and-casualty business and a well-defined capital management strategy. Their base case sees underlying post-tax earnings rising to €8.9 billion in 2026.
Cautious Stance on MAPFRE and Swiss Re
Barclays held its Equal Weight rating on MAPFRE with a €3.78 price target, warning that a slowdown in gross written premium growth could make its targets difficult to achieve. While motor insurance margins in Iberia are expected to improve, the bank stated that the company's diverse businesses do not generate a high enough return on equity to compensate for operational and currency risks.
Regarding Swiss Re, Barclays kept its Underweight rating while slightly increasing the price target to 116 Swiss francs from 113 francs. The primary concern is that an acceleration in reinsurance price declines could disappoint investors. While the broader reinsurance industry has benefited from a benign catastrophe environment—with large losses running 40%-50% below historical averages in the first half—Barclays believes major reinsurers will likely use this earnings tailwind to strengthen reserve buffers rather than boost capital returns.
