Asahi Market Share Slips in Japan as Poor Weather Curbs Beer Demand

Summary

Asahi Breweries saw its sales growth stall in June, losing ground in its home market as unfavorable weather conditions dampened beer demand and offset promotional efforts, according to a UBS analysis.

Background

Asahi Breweries' sales momentum in Japan faltered in June, with the company reporting flat year-over-year sales value and losing market share after outperforming from March to May. The slowdown comes as poor weather across the country suppressed demand for beer, according to a recent analysis of the sector by UBS.

Asahi's Performance Falters

The company's flagship Super Dry brand saw its sales volume increase by just 1% year-over-year, lagging the overall market. Another product, Asahi Gold, experienced a significant slowdown, with sales dropping to 180,000 cases in June from 930,000 cases in April. In response to the performance challenges, Asahi plans to renew its core Super Dry brand in October 2026 for the first time in four years.

Broader Market Headwinds

The entire Japanese beer market faced difficult conditions in June. While reported sales volume was flat compared to the previous year, UBS analysis indicates an underlying decline of 4-5% when adjusted for an additional business day in the month. Aggressive promotional campaigns by beverage companies were not enough to overcome the impact of the poor weather.

Competitor Kirin Brewery also underperformed, with its June sales value declining 2% year-over-year for the third consecutive month. The company is reportedly shifting more of its marketing budget to the second half of the year, ahead of a planned liquor tax revision in October.

Soft Drinks Sector Slumps

The broader non-alcoholic beverage market saw an even steeper decline, falling 7% year-over-year in June. Performance varied significantly among major players:

  • Coca-Cola and Suntory outperformed the market, with sales for both declining by 3%.
  • Asahi Soft Drinks posted a sharp 15% year-over-year drop.
  • Kirin’s beverage unit saw sales fall by 13%.

Looking ahead, UBS noted that several major beverage companies are planning price revisions, with Coca-Cola Bottlers Japan in September, Kirin in October, and both Suntory and Asahi in November.
