Background

Funds promoting environmental or social characteristics, known as Article 8 funds, accounted for $97 billion of the $209 billion in new European fund launches in 2026. This represents 46% of the total value across 1,058 funds analyzed, signaling a significant move of sustainable investing into the mainstream, according to a report published by Jefferies.

A Shift in Product Development

The analysis shows that Article 8 funds are now nearly on par with their Article 6 counterparts, which do not integrate sustainability and captured the remaining 54% of launches. Jefferies noted this narrow gap indicates that Article 8 is no longer a specialist category but has become one of the two primary classifications shaping European fund product development.

While the average new Article 8 fund was slightly larger at $202 million versus $197 million for an Article 6 fund, the largest individual launches were dominated by the latter. Article 6 funds accounted for nine of the ten largest new funds, though the report suggests Article 8 demonstrated a wider base of funds achieving a significant size.

Fixed Income Leads Integration

A key driver of the growth in Article 8 funds has been the integration of sustainability criteria into fixed income strategies. The asset class represented a significant portion of the new sustainable products:

  • Fixed Income: Made up 35% of Article 8 launches, compared to just 18% of Article 6 launches.
  • Equity: Accounted for 35% of Article 8 launches, while Article 6 funds showed a higher concentration in equity, allocation, and alternative strategies.

This trend highlights a strong focus on applying sustainability principles within debt markets. Geographically, global and European mandates comprised 66% of Article 8 funds, with Luxembourg and France being the dominant domiciles for these products. In contrast, Ireland hosted 30% of all launches, which were predominantly Article 6 funds.

Article 9 Remains a Niche

The most stringent sustainability classification, Article 9, saw minimal activity. Only 11 new Article 9 funds were launched in 2026, with none exceeding $100 million in assets, according to the Jefferies report. This suggests that funds with explicit sustainable investment objectives remain a small segment of the new product landscape.
