TSMC to Raise Chip Prices in 2027, Citing Costs and Strong Demand

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (NYSE: TSM) has signaled its intention to raise chip prices by 5–10% beginning in January 2027, according to sources familiar with the plan. The world's largest contract chipmaker is leveraging its market dominance and soaring demand for artificial intelligence processors to offset rising operational and expansion costs.
Strategic Price Increase
The planned price adjustments will apply to both advanced nodes (sub-6nm) and more mature process technologies (12nm, 16nm, 28nm). CEO C.C. Wei framed the move as "strategic, not opportunistic," attributing the necessity to increasing expenses for materials, equipment, and the construction of overseas fabrication plants, including its major investment in Arizona.
This announcement helps reframe the company's significant capital expenditures as investments backed by strong, locked-in demand, with a clear path to recouping costs. The move demonstrates TSMC's significant pricing power in an industry where its technology is fundamental to leaders like Apple and NVIDIA.
Record Financial Performance
The decision is supported by a stellar second-quarter financial report, which saw the company exceed analyst expectations. Key figures from the Q2 2026 earnings release include:
Ad- Revenue: $40.2 billion, beating estimates of $39.94 billion.
- Gross Margin: 67.7%, surpassing the company's own guidance.
- Net Profit: A record T$706.6 billion, marking a 77% year-over-year increase.
- Advanced Technology: Chips made on 7nm and smaller nodes accounted for 77% of total wafer revenue.
Fueled by the AI boom, the High-Performance Computing (HPC) segment grew 20% quarter-over-quarter and constituted 66% of the company's revenue.
Upgraded Outlook and Market Impact
Following the strong results, TSMC raised its full-year 2026 revenue growth forecast to over 40%. The company also increased its planned capital expenditure for the year to a range of $60–$64 billion, up from a previous estimate of $52–$56 billion, signaling continued investment to meet long-term demand.
In response to the earnings and price hike news, DA Davidson raised its price target on TSM stock to $500 from $450, maintaining a Buy rating. While the company anticipates a temporary 3–4 percentage point dip in gross margin in the third quarter due to the ramp-up of its 2nm process, the structural demand from the AI sector is expected to be a powerful long-term tailwind.
