Tech Stocks, Bonds Rally as Easing Oil Prices Overshadow Hawkish Fed Hike

Background

U.S. stocks and bonds staged a broad rally on Thursday, defying the Federal Reserve's hawkish interest rate hike a day earlier, as a pullback in oil prices and renewed optimism around artificial intelligence powered a rebound in market sentiment.

Markets Rebound Across Assets

The S&P 500 rose 1.1%, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite led gains with a 1.7% jump. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 316 points, or 0.6%. The rally was heavily concentrated in technology stocks, with significant gains for Nvidia (NVDA), Amazon (AMZN), Microsoft (MSFT), Intel (INTC), and AMD (AMD).

In a move that often runs counter to a hawkish Fed announcement, U.S. Treasury bonds also strengthened. The 10-year Treasury yield fell to a low of 4.93% after touching 5.02% on Wednesday. According to Robert Pavlik, a senior portfolio manager at Dakota Wealth, the move suggests that after an initial sell-off in anticipation of the hike, investors are now buying on the dip.

Catalysts Driving the Gains

Easing Oil and Geopolitical Tensions

A primary driver for the improved sentiment was a drop in crude oil prices. WTI crude briefly fell below $100 a barrel for the first time since the previous Friday. The pullback was reportedly linked to two developments:

  • Reports of potential diplomatic progress regarding the conflict in Iran.
  • News that Saudi Aramco is working to restore about half of its recently disrupted pipeline capacity within days.

"When an oil shock lasts this long, it inevitably seeps into the entire price system of the economy," said Ross Mayfield, an investment strategy analyst at Baird. "But any relief is a positive for consumers and businesses, and it allows the Fed to be less hawkish."

AI Narrative Boosts Tech

The technology sector received a specific boost from comments by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, who stated he expects the company's chip sales next year to be double this year's volume. He noted that the primary constraint is production capacity, not demand, reinforcing market confidence in the durability of the AI infrastructure investment cycle.

Outlook: Relief Rally or Reversal?

Despite Thursday's optimism, some analysts remain cautious. Strategists at Jefferies noted that historically, the S&P 500's average return is negative one month (-1.6%) and three months (-4.2%) after the Fed's first rate hike in a cycle.

Market pricing has adjusted to the Fed's stance, with CME's FedWatch tool showing the probability of another quarter-point rate hike in October rising to 54% from just 27% a week ago. This suggests an orderly, rather than panicked, acceptance of a higher rate path.

Investors face an immediate test with Friday's quarterly "triple witching" event, when stock index futures, stock index options, and individual stock options expire simultaneously. This event, involving the expiration of contracts with a notional value of over $2 trillion, has historically been associated with increased volatility. According to Bluekurtic Market Insights, the S&P 500 has closed lower on 12 of the last 14 triple witching days since 2012.
