Super Micro Computer Stock Surges on Strong Margin Outlook and Record AI Backlog

Summary
Shares of the AI server maker jumped in pre-market trading after its preliminary Q4 results revealed a significant gross margin beat and a $60 billion order backlog, though analysts remain cautious amid ongoing governance concerns.
Super Micro Computer (SMCI) shares surged in pre-market trading after the company released a preliminary financial update for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026 that revealed unexpectedly high profitability and a record order backlog, signaling robust demand for its AI infrastructure.
A Surprise Profitability Update
In a filing after the market close on July 21, Super Micro announced it expects fourth-quarter gross margins to be between 15% and 17%. This figure is nearly double the company's prior guidance of 8.2% to 8.4% and significantly higher than analyst expectations, suggesting a favorable shift in its product and customer mix. The company's preliminary revenue, however, is expected to be near the low end of its previously guided range of $11.0 billion to $12.5 billion.
Record Backlog Signals AI Demand
The most significant figure in the update was a record order backlog of over $60 billion received in the fourth quarter alone. This amount, roughly 3.6 times the company's market capitalization, indicates aggressive supply procurement from major AI and hyperscale clients. However, Super Micro included an important caveat, acknowledging that some orders may not be firm commitments and could be subject to cancellation or delays.
Analysts Cautious Amid Headwinds
AdDespite the positive update, Wall Street analysts remain largely cautious. Wolfe Research noted that while the margin results were positive, it views the company's "governance and regulatory risks as unresolved." The firm also pointed out that Super Micro's gross margins have historically been volatile and subject to customer mix, stating, "We’re not ready to call the gross margin improvement a trend."
Investors are weighing the strong operational results against several persistent concerns, including:
- A Department of Justice indictment of a co-founder and an ongoing internal review of alleged export-control violations.
- A planned $7 billion capital raise, which could introduce significant dilution risk for existing shareholders.
- The stock's performance, which remains down -48.86% over the past year, even with the pre-market gains.
Market participants are now looking ahead to the company's full earnings call on August 11 for more clarity on the sustainability of its margin improvements and updates on its governance issues.
