Strategy's Bitcoin Pivot Creates 'Near-Term Noise,' Standard Chartered Says

Background

A shift in how Strategy, the market's largest corporate Bitcoin holder, manages its vast reserves is creating short-term uncertainty for the cryptocurrency, according to a research note from Standard Chartered. The bank's analysts maintain that this is "mostly noise" and have reiterated their end-of-2026 Bitcoin price forecast of $100,000, contingent on the company clarifying its new approach.

A Shift from 'Never Sell'

Strategy, formerly known as MicroStrategy, appears to be pivoting from its long-held "never sell Bitcoin" mantra to a more complex financial strategy, analyst Geoff Kendrick wrote. The company holds 843,775 BTC, which represents more than 4% of the total 21 million coins that will ever be in circulation.

The change in approach was reportedly driven by a decline in the company's mNAV metric—its enterprise value divided by its Bitcoin holdings—which has fallen to approximately 1.0. This valuation makes its previous model of issuing shares to fund Bitcoin purchases less effective, according to the bank's analysis.

New Strategy and Market Impact

Standard Chartered suggests Strategy is now moving toward using its Bitcoin holdings as collateral for its preferred stock, which trades under the ticker STRC. This financial instrument, which has approximately $10 billion in notional value outstanding, effectively functions as a credit product backed by the company's digital assets.

Kendrick noted that the STRC stock is "heavily over-collateralised" and should, therefore, trade back to its $100 par value from its current level of around $90. The key to stabilizing the market, he argued, is for Strategy to effectively communicate its new plan. This would "reassure markets that wholesale selling is unlikely" and could remove the need for the company to sell any of its Bitcoin holdings.

Bitcoin Outlook

Despite the temporary uncertainty, Standard Chartered views recent price weakness in Bitcoin as a short-term distraction rather than a fundamental shift in its medium-term trajectory. The bank is maintaining its forecast for Bitcoin to reach $100,000 by the end of 2026, provided the market gains clarity on Strategy's intentions.
