S&P 500 Holds Steady as Meta's AI Rally Offsets Macro Headwinds, Analyst Says

Summary
The S&P 500 has remained stable in September despite surging bond yields and oil prices, supported by a major rally in Meta and investor hopes for a policy shift on Iran, according to research firm Vital Knowledge.
The U.S. stock market has shown notable resilience in September, with the S&P 500 holding steady despite significant macroeconomic pressures from soaring bond yields and oil prices. According to a note from the firm Vital Knowledge, this stability can be attributed to a powerful rally in the technology sector and investor speculation on geopolitical developments.
Narrow Rally Masks Broader Weakness
A surge in a handful of mega-cap technology stocks has been instrumental in keeping the headline index afloat. Vital Knowledge highlights that Meta Platforms has added nearly $400 billion in market value since the launch of its Muse AI agent on September 8, fueling a tech-centric rally that has counteracted broader market declines.
This narrow leadership, however, conceals underlying weakness. The firm pointed out that indices which are not weighted by market capitalization paint a different picture:
- The equal-weight S&P 500 is down more than 4% in September.
- The small-cap Russell 2000 has also fallen by more than 4% this month.
Vital Knowledge cautioned that a "myopic focus" on positive AI news is causing investors to overlook negative developments elsewhere in the market.
AdGeopolitical Hopes and Headwinds
The second factor supporting the market is investor speculation about a potential policy shift from the White House regarding Iran, a theory the firm dubs "TACO" (Trump, oil). The belief among some market participants is that the economic pain from rising yields and energy costs will compel the administration to de-escalate tensions, which could in turn lower both oil prices and bond yields.
However, Vital Knowledge expressed skepticism about this outcome. The firm argued that the situation is not a binary choice between escalation and resolution, and that a state of "low-level kinetic activity" and energy supply disruptions is more likely to persist.
Market Context
The S&P 500's flat performance for the month comes as major headwinds have intensified. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note has climbed by approximately 80 basis points in September, significantly tightening financial conditions. Simultaneously, Brent crude oil, the international benchmark, has risen above $100 a barrel, stoking inflation and economic growth concerns.
