Shopify's Transaction-Based Model a Key Defense Against AI Disruption, Morgan Stanley Says

Summary

Morgan Stanley reaffirmed its Overweight rating and $192 price target on Shopify, arguing the company's focus on monetizing transactions, not traffic, provides a strong defense against the rise of AI shopping agents.

Morgan Stanley has reaffirmed its Overweight rating on Shopify (SHOP), maintaining a $192 price target and arguing that the company's business model is well-positioned to withstand potential disruption from the rise of consumer AI agents like Meta's Muse and Instinct.

In a new research note, the bank contends that Shopify's core strength lies in monetizing the transaction itself, rather than discovery or advertising. This makes the platform resilient regardless of whether a consumer finds a product through an AI agent, a social media platform, or a merchant's own website, as long as the final purchase is completed within the Shopify ecosystem.

A Resilient E-commerce Engine

Morgan Stanley believes that as the channels for product discovery become more fragmented, Shopify's strategic value as an underlying platform connecting merchants, catalogs, checkout, and inventory management could actually increase.

The bank highlights that Shopify's lack of a major retail media business—which relies on ad revenue and search placement—is an advantage in this new era. Because Shopify primarily earns revenue from the transaction, the origin of the order is less important, positioning it as a neutral and attractive partner for various AI agents.

Addressing Key Market Concerns

The report also addresses a key market misconception regarding payment processing. Morgan Stanley clarifies that a consumer using a third-party digital wallet, such as Stripe's Link, through an AI agent does not cut Shopify out of the payment revenue stream.

This is because the consumer's wallet choice is separate from the merchant's underlying payment processor. If the merchant uses Shopify Payments, which already handles approximately 68% of the platform's Gross Merchandise Volume (GMV), Shopify still captures the full processing revenue. The bank argues that Shopify's payment income is more secure than recent stock volatility might suggest.

Foundational Strengths

  • Massive Catalog: Shopify has indexed over 1 billion products with real-time price and stock information, providing a rich data source for AI agents.
  • Integrated Infrastructure: The company controls the entire commerce chain from product catalog and checkout to order management and returns.
  • Early AI Adoption: Shopify has been proactive in developing AI e-commerce infrastructure, including its work on Agentic Storefronts.

Cautious Near-Term Impact

Despite the long-term bullish outlook, Morgan Stanley is not significantly raising its near-term financial forecasts for Shopify based on AI agents. The bank notes that the scale of current AI agents remains small, with Muse seeing about 2.8 million downloads in its first 12 days, compared to the 875 million unique consumers who purchased from Shopify merchants in 2024.

However, early data is promising. Shopify has seen traffic and orders from AI channels triple, with these channels acquiring new buyers at nearly twice the rate of others. Still, the bank believes it is too early to translate this momentum into concrete GMV or revenue forecasts, which are projected to reach approximately $500 billion in 2026.
