Background

Shares of Sandoz (SDZ) fell sharply after the company reported third-quarter sales that missed analyst expectations and narrowed its full-year revenue guidance. The stock traded down 4.6% to 78.34 as investors reacted to signs of slowing top-line growth.

Sales Miss and Outlook Trimmed

Sandoz announced third-quarter net sales of $2.94 billion, falling short of the analyst consensus of $3.01 billion. The miss was attributed to two main factors: short-term supply constraints in its key biosimilars business and persistent price erosion for penicillin active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in its generics division.

Following the Q3 performance, the company adjusted its full-year outlook:

  • Net Sales Growth: Guidance was lowered to a narrower range of 5–6% at constant exchange rates.
  • Previous Guidance: The company had previously forecast mid-to-high-single-digit growth.

Despite the revenue headwinds, Sandoz raised its forecast for its 2026 core EBITDA margin to a range of 23% to 23.5%. This represents a more significant improvement than the roughly 100-basis-point expansion previously guided from the 21.7% recorded in 2025.

However, the improved profitability outlook was not enough to offset concerns about the sales slowdown. The biosimilar segment, a critical growth engine, posted a 17% constant-currency sales gain but still came in below the roughly $1.02 billion analysts had anticipated, amplifying investor disappointment.

Market Context

The negative reaction was compounded by a cautious broader market environment, with the pan-European STOXX 600 and the Swiss SMI benchmarks both trading flat to slightly lower. Analysts at AlphaValue and Baader Europe had already downgraded the stock to 'Reduce' prior to the earnings release, signaling pre-existing concerns.

Investors appear to be focused on the operational challenges, with the market's reaction suggesting that the supply-chain issues in the high-growth biosimilars unit may take time to resolve. During the session, the stock hit a low of 75.50 before partially recovering.
