Remy Cointreau Stock Slides as Divisional Weakness, Downgrades Overshadow Sales Beat

Shares of Rémy Cointreau SA (RCOP) fell nearly 5% in Tuesday trading after the French spirits group reported second-quarter results that, while beating headline forecasts, revealed underlying weakness in a key division and triggered two analyst downgrades.
Mixed Results Trigger Sell-Off
For its second quarter, Rémy Cointreau reported organic sales growth of 4.2%, surpassing the analyst consensus of 3.6%, according to a report from Investing.com. Total sales reached €287.7 million, also ahead of the €280.8 million consensus estimate.
However, the positive top-line figure was undermined by the performance of its liqueurs and spirits division. The unit posted a 7.4% organic sales decline, a significantly steeper drop than the 4.7% decline analysts had anticipated. The company attributed the shortfall to destocking in the United States following recent changes to its distribution network.
Analyst Downgrades Add Pressure
The sell-off was intensified by two successive analyst downgrades centered on the stock's valuation following a substantial rally. The stock had gained 18% in October and 42% year-to-date, far outpacing sector peers.
Ad- Bernstein: The day before the earnings release, Bernstein cut its rating on the stock to "market-perform" from "outperform," arguing the rally already reflected future improvements.
- TP ICAP Midcap: Following the results, TP ICAP Midcap downgraded its recommendation to "sell" from "hold," citing stretched multiples after the stock's recent surge.
Rémy Cointreau currently trades at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 25.9, representing a premium of approximately 95% to its large-cap spirits peers. Analysts suggest this valuation now fully incorporates the company's recovery prospects.
Company Outlook Remains Unchanged
Despite the market reaction, Rémy Cointreau confirmed its full-year guidance for a return to sustainable organic sales growth, with management expecting momentum to build progressively throughout the fiscal year. The company also delivered some positive financial news, revising its estimated impact from U.S. tariffs down to approximately €5 million on current operating profit from a previous estimate of €20 million.
