Background

Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) is seeing demand for its artificial intelligence infrastructure broaden beyond its core hyperscale cloud customers, while its future product roadmap remains firmly on track. The update, detailed in a research note from Citi following discussions with the company's investor relations team, addresses investor questions about the sustainability of AI spending and potential disruptions from competitors.

Demand Widens as Roadmap Holds Firm

While hyperscale cloud providers have been the primary drivers of AI spending, Nvidia told Citi that demand from other segments has gained significant momentum over the past two years. The company identified AI laboratories, sovereign customers, and enterprise on-premise deployments as a growing share of the market.

Nvidia also provided key assurances about its product development schedule:

  • The Rubin Ultra roadmap is described as "fully intact."
  • The NVLink domain architecture revealed at the Computex conference has not changed.
  • The Feynman platform, expected in calendar year 2028, will give customers a choice between NVLink implementations using co-packaged optics (CPO) or traditional copper interconnects.

Focus on Energy Efficiency

Company management clarified recent comments from CEO Jensen Huang suggesting that $100 billion of compute could eventually require just one gigawatt of power. Nvidia explained this figure reflects expected long-term improvements in energy efficiency, not current infrastructure costs.

For context, the company estimates that its current systems generate approximately $30 billion to $40 billion of compute revenue per gigawatt. It noted that newer GPU generations, such as the forthcoming Blackwell platform, are significantly more power-efficient than the current Hopper architecture.

Financial and Corporate Updates

Nvidia reiterated its financial guidance, maintaining a target for gross margins in the mid-70% range and a plan to return 50% of cash flow to shareholders this year. A recent $25 billion debt offering was undertaken to provide greater financial flexibility.

Citing the company's strong access to constrained high-bandwidth memory (HBM) supplies, Citi reiterated its view of Nvidia as its top buy-rated mega-cap data center semiconductor stock. The bank's note indicates that investor focus remains on Nvidia's ability to maintain its technological lead and expand its customer base.
