Background

Shares of Nebius (NBIS) fell more than 4% in morning trading after the company's CEO revealed a staggering $200 billion funding gap for its expansion plans through 2030, sparking investor concern over the firm's massive capital requirements.

Funding Gap Dominates Sentiment

Speaking at Citi’s 2026 Global TMT Conference on Wednesday, CEO Arkady Volozh detailed the significant financing needed to support the company's growth. Volozh stated that Nebius has contracted for 5 gigawatts of capacity through 2030, a project requiring an estimated $250 billion in total financing.

Critically, Volozh disclosed that only around 20% of this capital has been secured, leaving a shortfall of approximately $200 billion yet to be raised. The sheer scale of the unresolved funding need became the dominant narrative for investors, raising questions about execution risk and potential future dilution.

Analyst Initiation Overlooked

The financing disclosure completely overshadowed an otherwise constructive development. On the same day, Truist Securities initiated coverage on Nebius with a Buy rating and a $355 price target.

In the initiation note, Truist analyst Arvind Ramnani argued that consensus forecasts for 2027 recurring revenue were too conservative. However, the market appeared to weigh the immediate and substantial financing challenge more heavily than the analyst's optimistic long-term view.

Market Context

A broader risk-off tone in the market contributed to the selling pressure, with the Nasdaq Composite declining 0.8% and the S&P 500 down 0.6%. The negative sentiment amplified the impact on capital-intensive technology stocks like Nebius.

The stock's decline also follows a sharp rally over the past year from a 52-week low of $73.52 to a high of $299.86, leaving it vulnerable to pullbacks on negative news. During the session, Nebius shares fell 4.2%, trading as low as $228.27.
