MaxLinear Outlook Raised to Positive by S&P on AI-Driven Recovery

S&P Global Ratings has revised its outlook on semiconductor company MaxLinear Inc. (NYSE:MXL) to positive from negative, signaling growing confidence in the company's financial recovery. The ratings agency affirmed MaxLinear's 'B' corporate credit rating, attributing the improved outlook to accelerating demand in its high-margin artificial intelligence (AI) data center and optical infrastructure segments.
AI Demand Fuels Turnaround
The outlook change reflects a significant operational turnaround for MaxLinear following a severe industry downturn that saw its total revenue decline by more than 70% from its 2022 peak. According to S&P, the recovery began in 2025 and has gained considerable momentum.
- Infrastructure revenue surged 141% year-over-year in the first half of 2026.
- This growth was primarily driven by strong demand for optical networking products essential for AI data center applications.
Improving Financial Projections
S&P projects a continued strengthening of MaxLinear's financial metrics as earnings recover. The agency anticipates adjusted gross leverage will decline significantly, falling to approximately 2.0x in 2026 and 0.5x in 2027.
AdFurthermore, S&P Global Ratings-adjusted EBITDA margins are forecast to reach around 30% by 2027. The company's liquidity is supported by approximately $65 million in cash and a recently expanded $130 million revolving credit facility. Free cash flow generation is expected to rebound, potentially exceeding $180 million in 2027.
Potential Risks and Path to Upgrade
Despite the positive forecast, S&P noted that free operating cash flow remains temporarily constrained by investments in inventory and wafer prepayments needed to support future growth. A potential contingent liability of approximately $160 million also exists related to the terminated acquisition of Silicon Motion.
A future upgrade to 'B+' is possible, S&P stated, if MaxLinear sustains revenue growth and profitability while maintaining adjusted leverage at or below 4x. Improved cash flow metrics and a clear refinancing plan for its 2028 maturity would also be required for a rating increase.
