JPMorgan Bullish on Gold Miners, Names 7 Top Global Picks

JPMorgan has reiterated its bullish stance on the global gold mining sector, identifying seven top stock picks across its coverage. The investment bank's optimism is rooted in what it describes as attractive valuations, high single-digit free cash flow yields, and robust balance sheets.
Bullish Sector Outlook
According to a note from the bank, the sector's financial health provides a strong foundation for shareholder returns and growth. JPMorgan analysts estimate the industry's average net cash position is approximately 3% of its market capitalization. This financial strength, they note, could support additional cash returns to shareholders, organic growth projects, or strategic bolt-on acquisitions.
Out of the companies it covers in the space, JPMorgan rates 16 stocks as Overweight and the remaining six as Neutral. The bank's analysts highlighted their preference for the majority of their Australian-based coverage.
Top Picks by Region
JPMorgan's preferred equities are spread across key mining regions, with specific catalysts and financial metrics underpinning each selection:
Ad- EMEA: AngloGold is favored for its cash return and re-rating potential, while Fresnillo was placed on a "Positive Catalyst Watch" due to potential upside in its 2026 gold output guidance.
- Americas: Barrick is highlighted for its attractive shareholder returns and improving execution. Aura Minerals earns an overweight rating for its strong free cash flow generation and growth prospects.
- Australia: Genesis and Capricorn are both preferred for their compelling production growth alongside attractive free cash flow and dividend yields.
- Asia: Zijin Gold is the bank's top pick in the region, cited for its high production growth and low-cost operations.
Other Ratings and Context
While bullish on the sector overall, JPMorgan assigned a Neutral rating to several miners. Agnico Eagle was rated Neutral due to its full valuation and a perceived lack of near-term catalysts. In Australia, Northern Star and Regis were also rated Neutral based on relative valuation.
JPMorgan's analysis comes amid other market commentary. BMO Capital recently downgraded AngloGold to Market Perform from Outperform, citing valuation. Separately, BofA Securities lowered its price target on Barrick, though it maintained a Buy rating, following a new joint venture agreement.
