Background

Morgan Stanley has upgraded Global Payments (NYSE: GPN) to Overweight from Equal-weight, significantly increasing its price target on the stock to $100 from $65. The investment bank cited growing optimism around the company's Worldpay acquisition and what it sees as an attractive risk-reward profile at its current depressed valuation.

Rationale for the Upgrade

In a note to clients, Morgan Stanley stated that recent channel checks point to an improving competitive position for both the recently acquired Worldpay business and the company's Genius platform for small businesses. According to the bank, feedback from enterprise customers indicated that Worldpay's product offering, ease of adoption, and customer service have all improved.

This positive momentum, along with traction for the Genius platform, underpins the bank's expectation for "durable mid-single-digit revenue growth." Morgan Stanley believes that even modest operational improvements could drive a significant rerating for the stock, particularly if investors begin to look beyond AI-related names for value.

Updated Financial Outlook

Reflecting its increased confidence, the brokerage updated its financial model for Global Payments. The new forecasts project stronger capital returns and earnings growth in the coming years.

  • Share Repurchases: Morgan Stanley raised its 2027 and 2028 share buyback forecasts to approximately $3 billion annually.
  • Revenue Growth: The 2026 adjusted revenue growth forecast was trimmed to 4% from 5%, reflecting weakness in Middle East travel. However, the outlook for 2027 and 2028 was increased to 6% annually.
  • Earnings Per Share: The firm lifted its 2027 adjusted EPS estimate to $16.30 and projected 2028 adjusted EPS of $20.71.

Risks Already Priced In

Morgan Stanley acknowledged several risks, including the complexity of the Worldpay integration, concerns about earnings quality, and the impact of continued disruption to travel in the Middle East. However, the analysts argued that these issues are already reflected in the stock's valuation, which they described as "excessively pessimistic" relative to its long-term growth prospects.
