French Soft Wheat Quality Exceeds Averages, FranceAgriMer Reports

France's 2026 soft wheat harvest is demonstrating quality characteristics that are well above historical norms, particularly in protein content, according to an analysis released Wednesday by the country's farm office, FranceAgriMer. These strong quality indicators are a crucial factor for millers and international buyers who rely on French wheat exports.

Key Quality Indicators

The report, based on a survey conducted with crop institute Arvalis, provided several key metrics that surpassed five-year averages. The findings currently cover 72% of the total planned samples.

• Protein Content: 89% of the soft wheat analyzed had a protein level of 11% or higher, significantly above the five-year average of 80%. At the 11.5% protein threshold, which is a benchmark for some buyers, 61% of the crop met the standard, compared to a five-year average of 51%.
• Test Weight: 96% of the crop met or exceeded the market standard of 76 kilograms per hectolitre, a measure of grain density that indicates potential flour yield. This is substantially higher than the 61% five-year average.
• Hagberg Falling Number: A full 100% of samples met the industry requirement of 250 seconds or more, a test for milling quality. This compares favorably to the five-year average of 85%.
