Five Below Upgraded by Mizuho on Attractive Valuation After Stock Pullback

Mizuho analysts on Tuesday upgraded shares of Five Below (NASDAQ: FIVE) to "outperform" from "neutral," arguing that a recent sharp decline in the stock's price has created a compelling buying opportunity. The firm's analysis suggests the discount retailer's growth fundamentals remain strong despite the market pullback.
Valuation Prompts Upgrade
The primary driver for the ratings change is the stock's valuation, which Mizuho described as "overly depressed" following a nearly 30% pullback. Analysts noted the shares now trade below 20 times forward earnings, a level historically seen only during periods of significant disruption.
While Mizuho slightly lowered its price target to $220 from $225, the new target still implies more than 20% upside from the stock's current trading levels. The firm sees the recent selloff as an attractive entry point for investors.
Underlying Growth Drivers Intact
Mizuho expressed confidence in Five Below's long-term momentum, even as it expects comparable sales growth to normalize from the first quarter's blockbuster 22.7% gain. The firm highlighted several key strengths supporting the business:
Ad- Customer Retention: The retailer is successfully retaining new customers gained during recent viral product crazes, such as the "squishy" toy trend.
- Social Media Reach: Paid influencers on platforms like Instagram and TikTok are effectively expanding the brand's reach among teens and families.
- Operational Improvements: Mizuho sees higher average store sales, increased digital marketing, and potential store layout changes as additional catalysts for earnings growth and margin expansion.
Above-Consensus Forecast
Looking ahead, Mizuho projects that Five Below will outperform Wall Street expectations in the second half of fiscal 2026. The brokerage forecasts comparable sales growth of 8%-9% and adjusted earnings per share of $9.22, which is above consensus estimates.
Analysts also anticipate that Five Below's management will raise its full-year financial outlook when it reports second-quarter results in September. The firm believes the retailer is well-positioned to sustain positive sales growth through fiscal 2027, supported by new product trends and continued store expansion.
